The Great Australian Relocation: Cost of Living Sparking Mass Interstate Moves

As cost-of-living pressures bite, a growing number of Australians are packing up and moving interstate in search of better pay, cheaper housing, and a more sustainable lifestyle—reshaping talent markets across the country.

A survey by Robert Walters found that more than half (54%) of Australians are considering relocating interstate to ease financial strain. The ABS confirms this shift, with Western Australia leading the country in population growth in 2024 (2.8%), followed by Victoria (2.4%), Queensland (2.3%), and NSW (1.7%).

Shay Peters, CEO of Robert Walters Australia & New Zealand, says this trend reflects a fundamental shift in how Australians are navigating financial pressures.

“The decision of where to live is no longer just a matter of preference; it has become a strategic decision driven by financial pressures. Choosing a place where one can earn a competitive income without spending most of it on daily living expenses will be a pivotal factor in these moves,” he explains.

Cities like Perth and Brisbane are becoming increasingly attractive for workers seeking affordable housing, less congestion, and a better work-life balance—without the crushing costs of Sydney or Melbourne.

For SMEs, these trends offer both challenges and opportunities:

  • Attracting interstate talent: Consider broadening recruitment efforts to tap into talent pools in growing states.

  • Retaining staff in high-cost cities: Offer hybrid work options or support relocation packages to help offset living costs.

  • Understanding local markets: Stay informed about state-by-state wage expectations and cost-of-living differences.

While the federal government has promised cost-of-living relief measures, such as energy rebates and expanded rental assistance, Peters warns that employers must take proactive steps now.

“These election promises are a step in the right direction, but the gap between political commitments and the everyday realities of working Australians is still wide,” he says.

SMEs who act now—by offering competitive pay, flexibility, and support—will be best positioned to retain talent in a highly mobile, cost-conscious workforce.
