Convenience, Connection, and Community: The Key to Small Business Success in a Changing Market
As the cost of living rises, small to medium businesses (SMBs) across Australia are being urged to rethink their strategies or risk falling behind. According to Vicki Leavy, General Manager of JMK Retail, iconic retailers and businesses from all sectors are making critical mistakes that could threaten their survival.
Leavy highlighted that businesses are not evolving to meet changing consumer demands. “Society is changing and shoppers are demanding more convenience, connection, and community,” she said. Customers still crave experiences, but now want them closer to home and more in tune with their lifestyle.
One of the key mistakes businesses are making is continuing to invest in large flagship stores or offices in city centres, despite the increasing demand for convenience in local, suburban areas. “Shoppers want to support nearby businesses and avoid long commutes and high parking costs,” Leavy pointed out.
Convenience, she added, is king. If customers can’t easily navigate a store or find parking, they’ll simply go elsewhere. “Retailers must simplify the experience at every level,” she explained. The demand for convenience isn’t limited to retail—it’s crucial across all SMB sectors, from hospitality to services.
Leavy also urged businesses to focus on local relevance. “What works in a capital city doesn’t always work in a regional or suburban setting,” she said. Tailoring offerings to local needs and building stronger connections with customers through staff training and community engagement are critical steps to staying competitive.
In the end, Leavy’s message is clear: businesses must innovate, go local, and embrace omni-channel strategies to thrive. “Those who innovate and go local will thrive. Those who don’t… won’t,” she warned.
By focusing on convenience, local engagement, and a personalised experience, small businesses can adapt and secure their place in a rapidly changing market.
