Victorian retailers have recorded an exceptional Black Friday performance, with shoppers spending almost $7 billion across the state, marking one of the strongest trading surges in recent years. Retailers say the spending spree has delivered a significant boost ahead of the Christmas period, helping to offset months of cautious consumer behaviour driven by rising living costs.
Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Centre was a standout performer. The centre experienced a 32% jump in customer traffic compared to the previous November, welcoming 120,000 visitors on Black Friday alone and more than 300,000 shoppers across the weekend. The turnout exceeded expectations, with many retailers reporting strong demand from the moment doors opened.
Centre Manager Daniel Boyle said the figures reflect both the appeal of deep discounts and shoppers’ desire to get ahead on their festive purchasing. “We were thrilled to see such strong engagement from our customers,” Boyle said. “The energy across the centre was incredible, and we expect December to be equally busy as Christmas preparations continue.”
Retail industry groups say the spending increase demonstrates the growing influence of Black Friday on the state’s shopping calendar. What was once an American retail tradition has now become one of Victoria’s most significant sales events, rivaling the Boxing Day rush.
Both major chains and small businesses reported robust sales, with many noting that shoppers are increasingly seeking value and planning purchases around major discount events. Online retailers also saw substantial gains, reflecting the ongoing shift toward hybrid shopping habits that blend in-store browsing with digital convenience.
As retailers now turn their attention to December, confidence is high that the strong momentum will continue. For many businesses, this year’s Black Friday performance has set the stage for a promising holiday trading season and reaffirmed Victoria as a powerhouse of retail activity.
