Are Things Finally Looking Up for Small Businesses in 2025?

Australia’s small business sector is entering 2025 with renewed confidence, as fresh research highlights strong investment intentions and a focus on innovation. With small businesses making up 97.2% of all businesses in the country, their success is critical to economic growth—and the outlook is promising.

According to the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO), 60% of small businesses plan to invest in growth this year. This surge in investment reflects a shift towards expansion, resilience, and long-term sustainability, despite ongoing economic pressures.

A key enabler of this growth is technology. Businesses are increasingly turning to digital tools to enhance efficiency, security, and operational continuity. The NAB SME Business Insights report reveals that one in four Australian SMEs is planning to increase technology investment in 2025, prioritising automation, cybersecurity, and cloud-based solutions to future-proof their operations.

With businesses looking to streamline processes, improve customer experiences, and strengthen their digital infrastructure, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of opportunity. As small businesses embrace innovation, they are set to play a crucial role in driving Australia’s economic momentum forward.
