The Most In-Demand Jobs in Australia for 2026: Where the Future Work Lies

As Australia approaches 2026, the nation’s workforce is transforming faster than ever; automation, an ageing population, and rapid technological change are reshaping which skills employers value most. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, total employment is projected to rise by around 6.5% by mid-2026, adding close to one million new jobs nationwide. Yet not all industries will benefit equally- most of the growth will come from healthcare, technology, and skilled trades.

Health and Aged Care: Australia’s Fastest-Growing Sector

Australia’s ageing population is the single strongest driver of employment demand. By 2026, aged and disabled carers are expected to experience growth of about 28%, translating to more than 74,000 new positions. Registered nurses follow closely, with employment projected to rise by 13.9%, or over 40,000 new jobs. Allied health professions such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and pharmacists are also expanding rapidly as healthcare systems adapt to increasing chronic and long-term care needs.

The government’s continued investment in aged-care reform, disability support (NDIS), and regional health services further underpins this growth. For jobseekers, healthcare remains a secure, purpose-driven career path with high long-term stability.

The Digital Surge: Technology, Data, and Cybersecurity

The digital economy is booming, and employers are desperate for skilled tech professionals. Software and applications programmers are expected to grow by 27% (around 42,000 new jobs), while ICT security specialists could surge by nearly 39%. The rise of cloud computing, AI, and data-driven business means that coding, cybersecurity, and systems analysis skills are among the most marketable qualifications in Australia.

Demand isn’t limited to tech firms- finance, healthcare, education, and even agriculture increasingly require digital specialists. Hybrid work and digital transformation initiatives are ensuring ICT roles remain both high-paid and high-priority.

Skilled Trades and Infrastructure: The Backbone of Growth

Infrastructure development and housing demand continue to support strong job creation in the trades. Australia’s ongoing energy transition and major government construction projects are fuelling shortages of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and metal fitters. Employers nationwide report persistent skill gaps in these essential roles, making vocational training and apprenticeships a clear pathway to long-term employment.

Education and Paramedical Support

Education and community services are also experiencing solid demand. Ambulance officers and paramedics are projected to grow by 22%, reflecting greater investment in emergency and regional health services. Similarly, early-childhood educators and teachers remain in steady demand as population growth drives school enrolments.

The Bigger Picture: Skills Over Jobs

More than half of all new roles by 2028 will require a vocational or tertiary qualification, highlighting the increasing value of formal training. Jobs requiring strong interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and technical expertise will thrive, while many low-skill clerical or manual positions continue to decline due to automation and digital tools.

According to Deloitte Access Economics, the non-market sector- health, education, and public administration- will remain a major source of employment, expanding by around 3% (135,000 workers) in 2025–26 alone.

Preparing for 2026 and Beyond

The message for workers and students is clear: future-proof your career through skills development. Whether through university, TAFE, or micro-credentials, training in health, technology, or trades will open the most doors. For policymakers, the challenge lies in closing skills shortages by supporting migration, apprenticeships, and regional training programs.

Australia’s job market is evolving toward a more skilled, digital, and people-focused future; those who invest in the right capabilities today will find themselves well-positioned in 2026 and beyond.
